Is Technology Interfering with Your Sleep?

electronic devicesIt’s no secret that getting sufficient sleep is an important part of staying healthy. Unfortunately, there are certain factors that contribute to sleep deprivation that many people aren’t even aware of.

For example, did you know that your electronic devices – your laptop, smartphone and tablet – could be affecting your body’s internal clock?

“These devices emit light of a blue wavelength, which tricks our brains into thinking that it is daytime,” states Business Insider. “Numerous studies suggest that blue light in the evening disrupts the brain’s natural sleep-wake cycles, which are crucial for optimal function of the body.”

Though blue light has positive effects on the body during the day, it can be detrimental at night, as it inhibits the production of melatonin, the hormone that tells the body and brain that it’s time to sleep.

So, how can you limit access to blue light at night? One option is to stop using your electronic devices a few hours before bedtime. However, since that’s not convenient for everyone, the source reports that there’s a program called F.lux that you can install on your computer that adjusts the brightness of your screen when it’s dark outside so that you’re not exposed to blue light at night.

If you begin noticing the effects of sleep deprivation, it’s a good idea to consult a physician. You could be suffering from an undiagnosed sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea. If this is the case, it’s important to get the treatment that you need.
