Indoor air can hold a lot of pollutants. Some sources of airborne contaminants are higher indoors. The relatively isolated environment of an indoor space means that any sources of contamination dissipate more slowly than outdoors.1 For example, the volatile organic compounds like xylene in spray paint are overbearing when used indoors. Dust from indoor sources like housepets and even our own skin cells accumulate and get kicked up into the indoor air. An air filter for a room can greatly improve indoor air quality.

Airborne Particles


When you use an air filter for a room, you can avoid inhaling all the things that are floating unseen in the air. Even when the air looks free of contaminants, it can actually be carrying a great deal of pollutants. Some airborne particles are too small to be seen by the naked eye, and some pollutants are invisible under the microscope.

An easy way to make sure that the air is good to breathe is with a well-made and appropriately sized air purifier or room purifier. Not all air filters are equal, and when choosing an air purifier to use indoors, you should look for a HEPA or ULPA filter. A High Efficiency Particulate Air filter, or HEPA filter, removes over 99.97% or airborne particles that are 0.3 microns in diameter, and actually removes a greater number of particles that are both larger and smaller than that size. An ULPA filter, or Ultra Low Particulate Air filter, removes over 99.999% of airborne material.

Airborne particles like soot, dust, pollen, mold spores, and pet dander are easily removed by fiber filters such as HEPA or ULPA filters. For chemical pollutants like the volatile organic compounds benzene or formaldehyde, an activated carbon or activated charcoal filter can be used.

It is important to keep in mind that if an air filter for a room will only be able to purify air in the room it is located in. For floorplans where two rooms are separated by a simple island, or if there is no significant obstruction to airflow, they are considered one room for the purposes of air purification.
