When it comes to maximizing your results from continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy so that you're getting better, deeper sleep, it's best to follow your doctor's orders. Here are some of the most common recommendations we hear in order to get the most benefit from your CPAP therapy.
1. Use your CPAP every day.
You need to use it diligently! CPAP therapy works best when used consistently. Use your CPAP every night and don't skip (as tempting as it may be). Skipping therapy can lead to recurrence of symptoms1 of sleep apnea and reduced overall treatment effectiveness. With time, you'll likely adapt to wearing the mask, and it will become a natural part of your nightly routine.
2. Keep your CPAP equipment on throughout the night.
Episodes of sleep disordered breathing still occur in the early morning hours just before you wake up. So, be sure to use your CPAP machine throughout the entire night.
3. Keep your CPAP equipment clean
It's important to regularly clean your CPAP equipment in order to prevent bacterial buildup, which can lead to respiratory infections or unpleasant odors. Clean the mask, hose, and water chamber and replace the filters and other parts as recommended by the manufacturer. You can also use a supplemental device like SoClean 3+2 to reduce 99.9% of bacteria* from your CPAP hose and mask**.
4. Check for Air Leaks
Air leaks are common but can significantly reduce the effectiveness of CPAP therapy. Check for leaks regularly by adjusting your mask and straps or re-positioning the mask while you sleep. If leaks persist, consider trying a different mask style, trying a CPAP pillow3 made to accommodate your equipment, or consulting your healthcare provider for a more customized solution.
We wish you well on your journey to better sleep health!
