Room Purifier

Using an air purifier to clean the air in a room is a great way to make sure that you are able to breath fresh air. An air purifier for a room, or room purifier, can create a small cocoon of cleared air.

Right-Sizing Purification

A room purifier is an air purifier that is the right size to deliver purified air in a room. While an air purifier for an office or an air purifier for a home may need to be professionally integrated into a full HVAC system, a room purifier can plug right into a wall outlet and begin delivering purified air immediately.

A room purifier’s CADR, or clean air delivery rate, determines how quickly air can be filtered. For example, if an air purifier has a CADR of 200 cubic feet per minute (CFM), it can deliver 200 cubic feet of purified air per minute. The volume of the room where the room purifier is going to be used needs to be divided by this number. In a room that is ten feet long by ten feet wide by ten feet high, there are 1000 cubic feet of air, which means a room purifier with a CADR of 200 CFM can clear all the air in the room in five minutes.

So long as the rate at which particulate matter and pollutants are being generated is lower than the rate at which the room purifier can clear the air, then the air purifier will be effective. When picking a room purifier, use the manufacturer’s recommended square footage to determine which size purifier you need.

Indoor air pollutants can come from a number of places. For example, in the kitchen the process of cooking food can introduce pollutants into the air.1 The living room and bedroom may have furniture with VOC-emitting foams and synthetic fibers. In the garage or basement, solvents from paints or harsh cleaning supplies also contribute to high levels of VOCs.

FAQs

An air purifier should not change the humidity in the air, so it will not cause your sinuses to be dry if the dryness is caused by low humidity. However, if you are accustomed to having a runny or slightly runny nose due to allergies, using an air purifier may lead to the sensation of having dry sinuses. This is because air purifiers remove the particulate matter which can cause allergic rhinitis2, leading to fewer incidences of runny noses from allergies.

It depends. Look for an EnergyStar certification if you want to get the best balance of CADR to wattage. Wattage is the unit of power that is often used as the unit of measure by electricity providers. An efficient air purifier can use as little as $3 of electricity per month.3

A well-maintained and cleaned air purifier should not make asthma worse with consistent use. There are a few things to keep in mind to make sure that asthma symptoms aren’t worsened by an air purifier. When first starting the air purifier, the increased air movement may cause an initial increase in the amount of airborne dust and allergens as settled dust gets stirred up. To avoid adverse reactions, let the room purifier run for a bit without anyone in the room to allow time to filter out any disturbed dust. Some integrated air purifiers in HVAC systems may end up growing mold or bacteria on them, a serious health concern and possible asthma aggravator. Spare replacement air filters should be kept on hand so that if a filter needs to be replaced due to mold growth, it can be done so immediately.

You probably do need an air purifier. Controlling the air you breathe can be as important as controlling the food and water you put into your body. An air purifier gives you an easy way to do this.

If a room has stuffy, still air, then an air purifier will help to circulate air. The sensation of stuffiness is the result of there being high temperature and little to no air movement or exchange of air in a room. Since an air purifier moves air, a room with an air purifier should not seem as stuffy. Also, the movement of the air may make the rooms inhabitants feel cooler.
