Video Shows What Sleep Apnea Really Looks Like
If you’re one of the 18 million Americans who suffer from sleep apnea, chances are you understand what your symptoms are and why they occur. However, since these symptoms happen in your sleep, you may not know what they really look like.
To help patients visualize the symptoms of this common sleep disorder, Philips Respironics – the creators of SleepMapper, a mobile and web-based system designed to help sleep apnea patients enhance their sleep therapy experience – produced a one-minute video that shows a man experiencing a sleep apnea episode.
In the video, we see that the man stops breathing for approximately 10 seconds, which is something that can happen to sleep apnea patients many times during sleep.
Truth be told, the video is a bit startling – especially when you consider the fact that up to 80% of people with sleep apnea remain undiagnosed. This typically means that they have no idea that these symptoms are even occurring, and that they’re missing out on important treatment – such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy – that can significantly improve their overall health.
If you have reason to believe that you may have sleep apnea, it’s in your best interest to consult your doctor as soon as you can so that you can get the treatment you need to prevent potentially serious health complications.
